The Lord, My Rock and Stronghold

The Lord is an eternal Rock. If only I could remember this with every breath, if only my heart could rest upon Him as upon solid ground when all else trembles. In His strength I find my steadiness, my security, my enduring stability. When my mind is restless and my heart unmoored, He becomes the firm place beneath my feet, the mountain that cannot be moved.

The psalmist cries, “I love you, Lord, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior.” In this love, every fear begins to fade. For the one who clings to the Rock cannot be swept away by the floods that rise from within or without. When the cords of death entangle and the snares of the abyss draw near, the cry of the soul reaches Him, and He bends low to hear. Out of the storm, He reveals His hidden power; from the darkness, He brings light.

The Fathers teach that the heart must learn to rest upon this immovable foundation. The storms will come, temptations will swirl, and the body will grow weak—but the soul that has surrendered its will and placed its trust in the Rock of ages will not fall. To stand upon Christ is to live no longer from one’s own strength but from the inexhaustible life that flows from Him.

O Lord, let my life be built upon You alone. Root me firm in Your word, steady me when my thoughts waver, and let my prayer rise from the depths like incense from the cleft of the Rock. May Your Spirit cry out within me day and night, until my heart knows no other refuge than You, and my love no other foundation.
